The Family Support Group is made up of parents, family members, and friends who provide significant support; emotional, psychological, financial or other, to a loved one who has a mental illness. It is not necessary for the person you are supporting to be a Laing House member or that they fit strictly within the age range for Laing members (16 to 30 years of age).
The goal of the group is to support one another through shared experiences with mental illness in a safe, supportive and confidential environment. Talking about experiences provides an opportunity to express concerns, challenges, hopes, fears, and successes with other people who share similar experiences.
There is also education offered on topics of interest to group members. Guest speakers address a variety of topics such as: symptoms of various mental illnesses, medications, psychotherapy and other treatments, nutrition, navigating the mental health care system and care and support for yourself.
Where: Laing House, 1225 Barrington St., Halifax
When: 1st Monday evening of the month from September to June (2nd Monday if 1st is a holiday)
